So it was great news this week that the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) is aiming to open language schools across the kingdom to not just touch up the English language skills of tour guides nationwide, but also in a third language such as Russian or Chinese. The Minister for Tourism and Sport, Somsak Pureesrisak said that some of Thailand’s major tourist destinations are in need of guides that can converse in other languages especially with the jump in tourism numbers from China and Russia over the past 5 years.

The courses will be offered for free initially, and TAT will survey each region across Thailand to find out which areas need the lessons most.

It’s a move in the right direction to improve hospitality across the tourism sector to ensure Thailand remains in the upper echelons of the world tourism market.

The latest airline to fly directly into Phuket is the Filipino low-cost airline, Cebu Pacific. The carrier plans to begin a direct flight service between Manila and Phuket starting on 16 August 2013.

Cebu Pacific will operate three weekly flights to Phuket on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. The company has also recently launched flights to Bali, and also to Bangkok from Manila, Clark and Cebu.

Thai AirAsia (TAA) have been in the news the past few days because they have projected that by 2017, they will have doubled their fleet of jets to 60. TAA recently announced that first quarter passenger volume figures in 2013 shows a 20% increase to 2.56 million. The airline is targeting a massive 10 million passengers for 2013, which will be an increase from 8.3 million in 2012, and 6.9 million in 2011. Any good news regarding the increase of passengers for a Thai airline is always great news for Phuket, which will no doubt see a big share of the increase being Thailand’s most sought after holiday destination.
