Thailand’s Marine Industry to Generate Billions in 2016

Calendar Apr - 05 | User | Comment no comments. | New Page News

luxury yachtOff the back of another highly successful Phuket International Boat Show at Royal Phuket Marina, an economic think-tank from the Kasikorn Research Center have estimated that Thailand’s yachting tourism industry will generate up to 5.8 billion THB in 2016, which will be a serious addition to Thailand’s overall tourism sector this year.

The group estimate that domestic yachts could make up 3.2 billion THB of that total, mostly in marine services, while the foreign yachting tourists are expected to generate in the region of 2.6 billion THB, which will also be mainly marina service related, including other related businesses and also boat tours.

The ‘think-tank’ recently stated that “Yachting tourists are a high-potential market segment that the government aims to promote since they are high-end spenders with four times the spending power of other segments.”

The report went on to conclude that “The government and private sector are cooperating to boost such business; the government provides marketing support and eases regulatory controls, e.g., extended visas for yacht owners, captains and crews, plus an accelerated fast track on a new law to allow superyachts to enter Thailand’s waters for leisure and commercial activities, as well as financial support to related businesses, e.g., marinas, to elevate service and competitiveness.”

The diversity of the Thailand tourism market is why the industry always seems so robust, even in times of adversity, with so many sectors contributing to the overall success of the tourism sector.

Phuket to get the Largest Ferris Wheel in the World?

Calendar Mar - 30 | User | Comment no comments. | New Page News

phuket amusement parkSome interesting and unique news recently surfaced that Phuket could be on their way to having the largest Ferris wheel in the world! Interesting, right? There are plans in the works to construct a state-of-the-art theme and amusement park in Phuket, with the largest Ferris wheel in the world being the centerpiece of the park.

There has been a consortium of businessmen who have applied for permission to the Phuket Provincial Land Office to construct the hi-tech amusement park. The plan is to construct the park over a 30-40 rai area, showcasing some of the largest scale amusement rides in the world, but that’s not the best part!

As part of the plans, the consortium wants to construct the largest Ferris wheel in the world, the title of which is currently held by the Las Vegas ‘High Roller’ at 168 meters tall. The group stated that the wheel will only take 18 months to build

This mega project will take Phuket tourism to another level, while at the same time attracting more investors from Europe, and especially the United Kingdom.

A recent press release about the park and wheel said, “It will be a landmark project, enhancing tourism to the province, and heralding a new era of choice for those wanting to see more on their holiday than the island’s many natural wonders.”

It all sounds amazing and is a real shot out of the blue. Let’s hope this goes through, because more tourism is just what the island’s businesses need.

Phuket Academy Affiliate to UWC is a Boost for the Region

Calendar Mar - 28 | User | Comment no comments. | New Page News

Aerial-ThanyapuraOne of the things that is extremely important for those families relocating to Phuket is the choice of international standard schools. It might even be the most important factor. This is why the recent news about the Phuket International Academy affiliating with the United World College (UWC) program is great thing for the local real estate market.

The Phuket International Academy, which is part of the Thanyapura complex will join with UWC later this year in August. The UWC is a global network of 15 schools, which was first established in the UK in 1962.

Affiliating with the group ensures higher standards for students and a great reason to buy property in the area if you are a family with kids. The IB curriculum will be followed by the school in conjunction with UWC’s standards.

It all goes to bolster Phuket’s growing reputation as a world class destination for those who want to relocate while at the same time still enjoying the same high educational standards we receive across the Western world.

Surge in Arrival Passenger Traffic in January

Calendar Mar - 24 | User | Comment no comments. | New Page News

Phuket_AirportThailand’s six major airports had a big start to 2016 with an upward trajectory of growth that bodes well for the coming year. The combined passenger traffic across the six major airports in Thailand surged to a 14.7% increase on January last year, dealing with 10.9 million passengers, showing that the growth trend from the back end of last year has filtered into the beginning of 2016.

The highest surge in airport traffic in January was at Don Mueang, who recorded overall traffic growth of 28.6% on this time last year, totaling 2.99 million passengers. The other airports include Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok, Phuket International Airport, Chiang Mai International Airport, Chiang Rai Airport and Hat Yai Airport.

International traffic alone in January rose 13.8% to 6.22 million, while domestic traffic grew 15.9% to 4.69 million.

If statistics and numbers alone can be used to gauge how the tourism industry is doing in the first quarter of 2016, then it has exceeded all expectations. Let’s hope this trend continues to move forward.
